From Nigeria to Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire to Madagascar, African black soap, a staple of the clean beauty movement, is a citizen of the African diaspora and beyond. Read between the ashes in the recipe and you will find the labor of women, the tales of ancient African skincare, the delicious scents of spices, soaps, and butters exchanged between Bedouins, pepper sellers, and the Hausa accross Sub-sahara. It tells the story of a centuries-old soap that adapts to its environment, its medicinal properties, and a whirlwind of untold narratives.
Created as an interactive website, the project draws on old travel writings, in the form of images and texts, African media, and personal experimentation. Through digital storytelling and visual documentation, it traces how black soap travels with its makers—transforming its recipe and meaning along the way.
This exhibit invites a deeper appreciation of black soap and the layers of history embedded in everyday objects.
As everything has a story, this one deserves to be told.
